چکیده

The hormone levels of auxin and gibberellin were studied in monoecious cucumber plants treated with growth regulators e.g. 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid (ethrel), gibberellic acid (GA3) and maleic hydrazide (MH). The studies were conducted at Vegetable Crops Research Programme, National Agricultural Research Centre Islamabad, Pakistan during 2003 and 2004. The greatest increase in female flower production, lowest ♂ to ♀ sex ratio, highest number of fruits/plant and yield were recorded with the application of MH at 450 μM/l as compared to control. Ethrel also significantly lowered the ♂ to ♀ sex ratio in cucumber. The treated plants had an increased level of auxin hormone. Hormone GA level had a positive correlation with the number of pistillate flower/plant, fruit set percentage and IAA level had a negative correlation with sex ratio.

A GAMYB homologue CsGAMYB1 regulates sex expression of cucumber via an ethylene-independent pathway

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) is a typical monoecious vegetable with individual male and female flowers, and has been used as a model plant for sex determination. It is well known that sex differentiation of cucumber can be regulated by phytohormones, such as gibberellic acid (GA) and ethylene. The molecular mechanism of female sex expression modulated by ethylene has been widely understood, bu...

Sugar signalling is involved in the sex expression response of monoecious cucumber to low temperature.

This study aimed to investigate how low temperature alters the sex expression of monoecious cucumbers (Cucumis sativus L.). Plants were grown under different day/night temperature regimes, 28 °C/18 °C (12 h/12 h), 18 °C/12 °C, 28 °C/12 °C, and 28 °C/(6 h 18 °C+6 h 12 °C). It was found that plant femaleness is highest in the 28 °C/(6 h 18 °C+6 h 12 °C) treatment. Analysis of endogenous phytohorm...

Sex expression in cucumber plants as affected by 2-chloroethylphosphonic Acid, ethylene, and growth regulators.

The effects of 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid (Ethrel), ethylene, and some growth retardants on sex expression of cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus L.) were investigated, with the use of a monoecious cultivar (Improved Long Green) which has a strong tendency toward maleness.Ethrel caused increased femaleness when applied at 50 milligrams per liter at the first to the third leaf stage, but when app...

Applying Calcium Carbide Solution Affect Sex Expression and Increases Yield of Monoicous Cucumber

Sex expression in cucumber is influenced by hormonal and environmental factors such as day length and temperature. Increasing female flowers that will develop to fruit is a trick for increasing yield, hence it’s importance. Likewise, it would help breeders through hybridizing process. Ethylene as a plant hormone is known to increase female flowers of most members of Cucurbitaceae family but as ...
